Ahead, In The Clouds

Clouds. With the right lens and a lot of patience (and luck), they can do some beautiful things. That's why my head can so frequently be found among them. The wind shear at the top of the formation above, shot in Kill Devil Hills, NC in 2010, makes it look like a thin veil. Or something.

Right there. Fly through that!

Storm-watching from the comfort and safety of one's balcony at the beach - a nice way to spend a lazy afternoon on vacation.

Whoosh.

Gull adrift in the downdraft at the edge of a cloudburst.

Closer to home - much closer - I shot these frames of a thunderhead roiling and rolling to the north of Germantown, MD in May of 2011. It was different every time I looked up.

"If you'll look out the right side of the aircraft, you won't see the intense storm we're narrowly avoiding."

Mashed potato clouds!

Faces in the crowd.

You missed us this time, Nature. Nice show, though.

Ciao for now!

Don't Forget To Take Your OBX. Come On - It's Good For You!

Finally. In October, 2007 [Maris] and I took our first real vacation in over three years, and the first photo excursion with the digital camera. North Carolina's Outer Banks feature some of the east coast's largest and most accessible lighthouses. We started at the north end and worked our way south, finding photo ops galore and amazing seafood all along scenic Route 12. This post just covers our first morning. The first three shots are Currituck Beach Light in Corolla.

Oh, if you knew how long we stood here waiting for a tourist-free shot... You'd think we were odd, which we are, so that's cool.

Cupola!

If this little gem looks just a little too perfect, it kind of is. This is a replica of the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse, now residing in Manteo.

Bodie Island Light as seen from Route 12, nearly a mile away.

While considerably closer than a mile, we did have to stay pretty far away from the 165-foot tower in order to keep the whole thing in frame without going all wide-angle.

Starting to get a little wide-angle-y here, but it's okay. It's a very cool lighthouse.

Cupola!

Thanks for peeping - more stuff coming soon...
